The Special Collections Library of the University of Michigan holds a collection of books, manuscripts, pamphlets, artwork, and other materials. The Library is particulary well-known for the Labadie Collection of Social Protest Material and the Papyrus Collection.

Project Objectives

  • Provide reference support at the Special Collections reference desk
  • Provide pre-cataloging work on the Russian language portion of the Fan Parker Nabokov gift
  • Provide a list of archival materials in the Nabokov gift
  • Provide written responses to requests for republication of images from Special Collections

Learning Objectives

  • Learn the reference functions of the Special Collections Library, including assisting patrons with research questions and helping them with access to partially cataloged items
  • Learn to use OCLC to import new records into MIRLYN for Russian language books in the Fan Parker Nabokov collection and thus learn collection development
  • Respond to reference questions and publication requests from written and e-mail requests

Project Outcomes

I pre-cataloged the Russian language books in the Fan Parker Nabokov gift. These books are now in the library's catalog. Each book has a shelf location noted in the entry. Further cataloging awaits the assignment of Library of Congress classifications. I also created a list of other archival materials in the Fan Parker gift to prepare for archival processing.
