LexisNexis Academic & Library Solutions is the premier publisher of research collections and reference solutions for libraries worldwide. Their products and services cover a wide array of offerings in electronic and traditional media.

Project Objectives

  • Compare existing digital imagery with the Index and Cartobibiography of Maps and further develop discrepancy lists that will be used in creating new cartobibliographic records and in filling out the workflow necessary for the conversion, encapsulation, and scanning of tens of thousands of Serial Set maps
  • Attend editorial and production meetings
  • Work closely with LexisNexis staff to identify and document smaller or less detailed maps in the Serial Set that will not need to be conserved and scanned from the originals
  • Assist in the LN Congressional redesign efforts

Learning Objectives

  • Broaden technical, cartographic, and bibliographic knowledge base as well as becoming more familiar with the Serial Set and historical maps
  • Witness XML publishing on a massive scale, learn about high resolution JPEG2000 files, and learn how other LexisNexis staff create such products as CISIndex

Project Outcomes

At the completion of the internship, I made significant progress towards the project. I evaluated hundreds of maps from the U.S. Serial Set to determine which maps needed rescanning. The first maps were collected and scanned shortly thereafter.
