Project Objectives

  • Create processing notes for selected materials, for vendor use and instruction
  • Work 1-3 hours per week at the Millar Library Information and Reference Center
  • Assist in the identification of cost categories so a comprehensive cost analysis can be conducted on the project
  • Create documentation and content for the Digital Library website

Learning Objectives

  • Gain experience in the preparation of special processing notes, similar to preservation notes, for print material selected for digitization
  • Learn how to conduct effective reference interviews with an undergraduate, graduate, and faculty clientele
  • Gain an extensive knowledge of the associated workflow patterns and budgeting requirements in a grant-funded project
  • Gain knowledge of the professional work environment in an academic library
  • Learn how to write clear and concise documentation that will enable staff to learn about the Digital Library
  • Gain experience writing content for a web environment
  • Gain knowledge of metadata creation and usage in a digital library setting

Project Outcomes

By the end of my internship, I processed five folders (approximately 200 documents or 1200 pages) of material for digitization. This included creating inventory lists for each folder, special transmittal notes for each document, preservation photocopying, file-naming, and shipping the material out to our vendors.

As part of this internship, I also co-authored an article on the start-up costs associated with building a digital library. It was accepted by the Internet Reference Service Quarterly for publication in Spring 2006. It is tentatively titled "Going Broke, Going Digital."
