Bentley Historical Library and the School of Information [Web site]
Ann Arbor, MI
Summer 2005
Email

The Bentley Historical Library was established in 1935 by the University of Michigan Regents to serve as the official archives of the University and to document the history of the state of Michigan and the activities of its people, organizations and voluntary associations.

Project Objectives

  • In conjunction with the Bentley Historical Library and the Digital Library Production Service, work on programming a site featuring alternative visualizations and functionalities for finding aids
  • Design and run usability tests on the representations and functional specifications of the finding aids
  • Analyze the data from these tests and assist in the development of research reports
  • Conduct other testing as needed
  • Consult on the data repository needs and functionality for the project "Developing Standardized Metrics: Towards Understanding the Impact of College and University Archives and Special Collections on Scholarship, Teaching, and Learning"

Learning Objectives

  • Gain experience in programming the back end for archival finding aids and full text images
  • Increase expertise in website evaluation and usability testing
  • Learn about the potential in creating a data repository for archival evaluation data on use and user services from archives around the United States

Project Outcomes

I created the project web site where the ongoing work on the finding aid portion of this work resides. I also completed an assay of online archival tutorials, both for size and readability and I am nearing completion on an initial experimental design focused on evaluting the user response to current online finding aids as compared to paper finding aids.
