Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library
Ann Arbor, MI
Summer 2005
Email

The Gerald R. Ford Library collects, preserves, and makes accessible to the public a rich body of archival materials on U.S. domestic issues, foreign relations, and political affairs during the Cold War era. The 1974-77 presidential papers of Gerald Ford and his White House staff form the core collection. These are supplemented by the pre- and post-presidential papers of Gerald Ford, the papers of Betty Ford, collections of Federal records, and more.

Project Objectives

  • Learn the software and workflow processes of the Remote Archives Capture (RAC) program
  • Record actions on returned documents, return documents declassified in whole or in part to our open or still unprocessed collections, and revise withdrawal sheets for returned documents in accordance with Ford Library standards and practices
  • Prepare documents not yet scanned for RAC by identifying their agency equities
  • Create a procedures manual outlining and describing the RAC returns process for Ford Library staff

Learning Objectives

  • Expose the student to the burgeoning field of federal electronic document management and large-scale declassification review efforts
  • Expose the student to document scanning preparation and introduce the student to government-contractor working relationships
  • By creating a staff procedures manual and workflow, the student will have the opportunity to reflect on his work and gain experience in technical writing

Project Outcomes

By processing the returned documents and scanning a new batch for RAC, I was exposed to one of NARA's electronic records iniatives. Moreover, the opportunity to create a user's guide to the RAC systems allowed me to codify the workflow and technical nuances of the program for future processing endeavors.
