Entertainment Weekly [Web site]
New York, NY U.S.
Winter 2008
Email

Entertainment Weekly launched in 1990 and is today known as America's leading consumer magazine of entertainment and popular culture. Each week, Entertainment Weekly brings more than 11 million readers the latest entertainment news, behind the scenes scoops, exclusive interviews and artistically executed photo spreads. EW.com is the award-winning online extension of Entertainment Weekly magazine and the leading website about pop culture, presenting the Web's best daily news, reviews, commentary, and interactive features about every aspect of entertainment. Because you're already bombarded with hundreds of entertainment options everyday, our goal is to provide information and recommendations that help you make the best choices and enhance your engagement with movies, DVDs, television, music, books, and the Internet. Every day, EW.com publishes online-only breaking news, episodic reviews of TV shows, photo galleries, interviews, video, and more. Most of the articles on this site appear only on the Web but the site also includes a text-only archive of Entertainment Weekly magazine since the first issue in 1990. Project Objectives

  • Write metadata for every article in a set of Entertainment Weekly issues (May 1995 -- Nov. 1995)
  • Edit and format each article within a content management system
  • Use a taxonomy system to build relationships between entertainment people and media products to make the articles more searchable

Learning Objectives

  • Build an understanding of how content management and taxonomy systems work
  • Effectively work within the content management and taxonomy systems to create magazine content that is accessible to a wider audience
  • Create metadata that is concise yet informative

Project Outcomes

I published 4 issues, completing all metadata, formatting, and taxonomy work. Additionally, I completed partial work (either metadata or formatting) for an additional 7 issues. I will continue to work through April and into May to finish remaining issues.
