Nichols Arboretum is a 123-acre living museum nestled in the hills adjacent to U-M's Central Campus.

Project Objectives

  • Photograph and record the GPS location of 300+ trees in the Arboretum
  • Create web pages that contain fun and useful interpretive data about the trees
  • Devise and implement navigation and organization schemes that will be useful for our audience
  • Tie together an ArcGIS map of the trees to the existing plant records database.
  • Make the system easily updatable by the staff of the Arboretum

Learning Objectives

  • Catalog an extemely unusual collection -- the trees of the Arboretum
  • Learn how to consider what users of different backgrounds want to know and how to create records to store these attributes
  • Learn to use GPS and ArcGIS technologies and how they can be used as information tools
  • Gain knowledge of how to organize and present a complex array of data to the public
  • Learn to design an interface to the database for the grounds staff at the Arboretum

Project Outcomes

This project culminated in the creation of a web interface to a currently existing plant records database. I populated the database with approximately 300 woody plants in the Arboretum collection. I also created an attractive and user-friendly website that provides easy navigation and useful organization of the collection, including digital maps of where each of the 300 trees is located in the Arboretum. This final step was achieved by using a GPS device and ArcGIS software to create a map that represents the 300 trees and ties into the currently existing plant records database.
