The Adaptive Technology Computing Site (ATCS) at the University of Michigan is an ergo-assistive work-study computing environment open to students, faculty and staff. The site is designed to accommodate the information technology needs of physically, visually, learning, and ergonomically impaired individuals.
Project Objectives
- Use Radio Frequency IDentification navigation for the blind
- Create a prototype system to help the vision impaired navigate campus through the use of RFID tags and readers
- Create a streamlined and less expensive system once proof of concept is established
|
 |
Learning Objectives
- To learn about the information needs of the vision impaired
- How to get an idea from the concept stage to a concrete and workable prototype
- To learn about the methods used to create accessible websites
- How to find resources
- To learn more about what information can be useful to orient one's self using auditory cues
|
Project Outcomes
The team created a system that will sense an RFID tag, pull data from a database and synthesize that data to speech. We still need to integrate a remote and a digital compass into the system and do user testing. We will also conduct interviews to find out what the blind community would find most useful to hear and would like to have in such a system.
