International Business Machines Corporation, abbreviated IBM and nicknamed "Big Blue," is a multinational computer technology and consulting corporation headquartered in Armonk, New York, USA. The company is one of the few information technology companies with a continuous history dating back to the 19th century. IBM manufactures and sells computer hardware and software, and offers infrastructure services, hosting services, and consulting services in areas ranging from mainframe computers to nanotechnology. IBM has been known through most of its recent history as the world's largest computer company; with over 388,000 employees worldwide, IBM is the largest information technology employer in the world.

Project Objectives

  • As the co-op for the User Experience team in IBM’s Total Workplace Experience Center of Excellence (located under the CIO), my primary responsibilities centered developing recommendations or design for internal intranet applications within IBM.
  • 1. Project: Metaverse – IBM Virtual Environment
  • This project primarily consisted of researching virtual environments for use within IBM to facilitate management training and team work for distributed employees. The key objective was to pull out a set of recommendations for the project team as "must haves" or "have nots" to include in the project design.
  • 2. Project: ThinkPlace – Ideas submission and evaluation
  • For this project I worked as the lead usability specialist to redesign the previous version of ThinkPlace which is an idea submissions web application that seeks submissions from employees to discover cost savings, process refinements, cultural changes etc. My primary objective was to incorporate more Web 2.0 features for greater collaboration among participants.

Learning Objectives

  • Experience working as a usability specialist within a fully integrated team of developers, project managers and other administrative leads.
  • Learn how UX design, agile development and usability techniques are used within IBM's development process.
  • Develop skill in running remote usability tests.
  • Practice user centered methodologies in a corporate context.

Project Outcomes

By the end of the summer I had a strong set of recommendations to pass on to the Metaverse team for key elements they should consider when designing a virtual world for IBM. The outcomes for ThinkPlace included completion of a user survey, a draft information architecture redesign, a redesigned rating tool and numerous recommendations that the team had yet to decide to implement. Overall it was a profitable summer. I experienced a lot and the results of my work are being used by the thousands of IBM employees who use ThinkPlace!
