SI SpotlightShibani Kapoor (MSI '05)
"Within the first month of being at U-M, I felt more loyal to it than the university at which I spent four years getting my undergraduate degree. Having been part of the larger U-M community, I took every opportunity to get involved in things that U-M is known for, whether it is going to a football game in the magnificent stadium or taking classes at the prestigious business and engineering schools. U-M taught me how to strike the right balance between working hard and playing hard. It gives me a feeling of confidence and great pride to say that I am a U-M alumna."

Before SI: Shibani spent her formative years in India and attended the University of California-San Diego, where she received her bachelor's degree in math and computer science with a minor in cognitive science.
"I enjoyed software development but could not see myself doing it for the rest of my life," she says. "I was more interested in my minor where I learned about human behavior and how people interact with computers. So I decided to pursue this interest further and get a master's degree in Human-Computer Interaction."
At SI: The ability to mold her degree program to fit her career interests was a plus for Shibani. "I liked the flexibility of the SI curriculum. The core curriculum built the foundation for a Human-Computer Interaction skill set, while the electives allowed me to tailor this field in the direction I was interested in, like engineering- and business-focused areas.
"The well-known professors who teach at SI also attracted me very much to the school," she adds. "SI being part of the prestigious University of Michigan also drew me to the program."
SI encourages students to join social and professional organizations, and Shibani took advantage. "The most memorable experience I had at SI was participating in programs like the Community Information Corps (CIC) that allowed me to get practical work experience," she says.
"My current job involves a lot of work with culturally different and geographically dispersed teams, so my project work in Kenya through the CIC program was extremely beneficial.
"The other very memorable part of my time at SI was all the great friends I made and the crazy times we had together, whether it was at the DIAD or at one of the many 'happy hours' that SI students organized."
After SI: Now Shibani is a human factors engineer at Intel Corp. "SI provided me with the basic HCI skills that I need for my job, which I could have received from any school, but unlike many programs, SI's emphasis on group project work and getting practical experience helped me most in landing my job," she says.
"While I utilize many of the HCI-related skills I learned at SI on a daily basis at my job, the skills that come in handy the most are ones that I developed while working with my project team members and those I developed during my internship I got through the CIC."
