Sylvie K. Williams (MSI '06)

Sylvie Williams
"I think usability is one of those fields where you have to wholeheartedly believe in its usefulness. You are either for it or you are not. And if you are not, you are doing yourself and the field a disservice. Find something else. But, if this is your passion and you can see yourself fighting for the rights of users with the project managers, the developers, the clients ... then SI is the place to be."

Before SI: Sylvie completed her bachelor's degree with a major in business administration and an option in computer information systems from California State University.

At SI: SI turned out to be a natural progression for Sylvie in terms of continuing her education. "I had always thought that I wanted to work in the area that existed between the computers and people," she says. "I knew that I didn't want to be a programmer and I didn't want to go into management. I wanted some way to join the two and make it easier for people to interact with systems. SI is where I found the program to help me do that."

After SI: Now a user-interface designer at Lockheed Martin, Sylvie says her SI experiences were instrumental in giving her an edge in the marketplace. "It was my education at SI that helped me land my job," she says. "Two classes that really stood out were Judy Olson's SI 622 and Tom Brinck's design class. Those two classes are what help me do my job day to day. I had the passion for usability and SI helped me get the tools to put that passion to work."

In addition to experience gained in the classroom, the projects that Sylvie worked on proved to be assets, too. "I feel like almost every project that SI made me do helped me get where I am today," she says. "The fact that we had to do a real-life project with a real client for most of the classes helped me look beyond the textbooks and the notes and learn how to communicate ideas and results.

"It's easy to type up something and hand it to another person, but when you have to fight for the value of your work, I believe that SI really taught me how to do that."
