Since the Public Policy Office of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) shares an office suite with Computing Research Association (CRA), Henry Chou was able to work for both organizations. For CRA, Henry researched on various government agencies' fiscal year 2003 budget components for information technology research and development. This information was needed for the IT R&D section of an annual report that AAAS publishes. For ACM's Public Policy Office, Henry researched on the case of British Telecommunications v. Prodigy, in which British Telecom (BT) makes a claim on the patent of hyperlink. The mentors at both CRA and ACM Public Policy Office provided Henry with valuable insight and encouragement, and shared experiences and thoughts. With their encouragement, Henry also visited two House Office Buildings for public hearings, getting a glimpse of the workings of public policy. The mentors signaled that the policy makers, professional organizations, and scientific community are still very much in need of people who are both savvy in science and technology and interested in public policy. |
