Citizens Committee for New York City
and the Jacob Riis Community Technology Center
|
"As an HCI specialist, I was particularly fortunate to see this one-on-one people-computer interaction, especially for the varying age groups, 9-13,14-18, Adult, and Senior Citizens. It was great watching senior citizens come in early each morning, at their set morning block of time, excited to use the computers to play online games."
"Overall, it was an interesting and valuable experience especially in the context of the Community Information Corps class I'm taking this term at SI."

Baaba Baiden and Erin Doumpoulaki spent ASB 2003 working with The Jacob Riis Community Technology Center (CTC), a subsidiary community-based organizations of the Citizens Committee for New York City. The Jacob Riis CTC is part of the larger Jacob Riis Community Center and offers information technology services and resources to the youth, adult and senior members of the community in the form of assistance, classes, Internet access and mentoring.
The students designed a database that the Community Center will use to keep track of the people who participate in the Community Center's activities. They also sat in on a meeting between several neighboring community technology centers in New York where there was open discussion about community technology center challenges, exchange of best practices and lessons learned, and dialogue about upcoming conferences related to strengthening the position of community technology centers.
