Washington Extracurriculars

"I think the opportunity to bond with other SI students was one of the best parts of this trip. We had a great time together!"

The weather during Alternative Spring Break 2003 was not exactly 'spring break weather' (it snowed quite a few inches on top of the deluge the East Coast had gotten the week before our trip!), but the students took advantage of their locale and participated in a plethora of cultural and entertainment events that Washington, DC has to offer.

Some of the activities students did include: visiting the US Holocaust Memorial Museum and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, going up the Washington Monument and seeing the White House, perusing the National Gallery of Art and the Library of Congress, going to an NHL game, hanging out with fellow ASB participants for drinks and some Euchre, and of course, savoring a wide variety of delicious cuisine.

A highlight of the ASB week in DC was the privately sponsored dinner at Smith & Wollensky restaurant. One student summed up the sentiment of all the ASB diners that evening in a thank you letter to the restaurant:

"From the moment we entered your establishment … we feared that we would never want to leave. When the tiers piled with fresh shellfish arrived at the table, however, we knew we were lost. Throughout the evening, your staff was both attentive and unflappable, skillfully guiding us through one sumptuous course after another. Somewhere between the impossibly luscious steaks and the breathtaking slab of carrot cake, even the most temperate soul among us had succumbed to your restaurant's charms."
