Julie Arendt and Renju Jacob spent a highly productive week at the American Red Cross Office for Volunteer Resources Management. They each created Access databases. One of the new databases answers frequently asked research questions by ARC volunteers and service area staff; the other tracks applications and the selection process for volunteer leadership positions. They were introduced to work-life at a non-profit and were able to make a significant contribution to meeting volunteer needs. They also toured the disaster response area of the American Red Cross headquarters.

Abigail Potter commuted to Falls Church, Virginia where she worked at the Hazel Braugh Record Center & Archives. There she performed tasks relating to processing archival material, including stabilizing documents, creating filing systems and finding aids consistent with existing organizational schemes, and entering collection information into a PastPerfect database. She also surveyed, searched, and grouped archival material from WWII scrapbooks for a special museum exhibit.

  • “The project itself didn't have any impact on my career plans but the week has left a great deal of networking opportunities.”
  • “I liked most that my assignment involved work that would impact my organization. I also liked that the supervisor at my site took the time to let us know more about how the American Red Cross operates and about the bigger picture of management in non-profit organizations.”
  • “Talking with my supervisor about her experiences managing the archive and the issues she deals with i.e. being the only archivist on staff, managing volunteers, etc. really made this experience valuable. She gave me a lot of insight into the archival field.”
