National Library of Medicine (NLM, National Institutes of Health)
first-time ASB host see www.nlm.nih.gov
Three SI students worked with the National Library of Medicine during ASB 2004. In addition to working on their projects, the students got a formal tour of NLM, a formal tour of the current Changing the Face of Medicine exhibit, and a tour of Howard University's Medical Library with some of the NLM Associates. They also were introduced to various people, including the Director of NLM.
Eunice Kua worked in the History of Medicine department organizing the papers of the former Surgeon General, Dr. Everett Koop. She was given an overview of the workflow of a major archival digitization project. Under direction of the archivist, Eunice reviewed recently acquired materials and processed archival materials. Through the week she gained experience with the metadata entry system and worked through a number of complex records.
Michael McCaffery worked with the Tox Town project. He attended a number of meetings concerning information outreach and found these to be a valuable learning experience. Michael gave feedback on the Tox Town farm scene and recommended links to fill in needed information on the website.
Monique Uzelac worked with the National Information Center for Health Services Research (NICHRS). She created search strategies for the Partners in Public Health web portal in two objective areas: chronic kidney disease and immunizations and infectious disease. She also had the opportunity to review the Grants and Funding section of the Health Service Research web portal and revise and suggest websites.

- NLM is such a diverse library it was a pleasure just to have the opportunity to tour and meet people.
- The site supervisor included the three of us in many of the plans they had for the NLM Associates.
- The NICHSR group where I worked was great, very welcoming and friendly.
