Five SI students spent their ASB week at the Smithsonian' National Museum of the American Indian. The students were quickly put to work on three projects: organizing, classifying, identifying and digitizing a number of the collections.

Two students, Christy Eyre and Amanda Carvell, worked in the Photo Archives for the Museum. Though the day to day work consisted primarily of basic archival processing, the collections held by the NMAI were wonderful to work with. The students enjoyed the huge variety of objects and photographs.

Teri Oaks and Rebecca Tremaglio worked on a Digital Asset Management System (DAMS), a joint venture between the Media Archives and IT departments. They interviewed potential system users from different departments about their collections, which will be sheperded into the DAMS. The students developed reports about the state of those collections, including their recommendations. Teri and Rebecca also had the opportunity to catalogue 200 video and audio items for the new system.

Cari Rottenberg worked in the Community Services area of the NMAI and helped prepare for the opening of the new NMAI building on the Washington Mall. One highlight of the ASB week for Cari was seeing Tom Daschle speak at the National Congress on the American Indian. She spent much of the week doing internet research on tribal museums across the US and Canada. Cari also evaluated a new website and gave feedback about the system. She appreciated the opportunity to learn about IT systems in use at the Cultural Resource Center.
