NetAid
first-time ASB host see netaid.org
NetAid took on three SI students for ASB 2004 and engaged them in a few technical and strategic planning projects of great importance to the small organization. Each of the students was given an opportunity to present their work at the end of the week to the organization.
Sadanori Horiguchi used his technical expertise to port data from an old database to a new one. He then analyzed the data and wrote a short report on some of the key statistical findings of interest to NetAid. The project allowed him to learn a new database management system and, despite a healthy opposition to using Microsoft products, he did force himself to learn enough Excel to get the job done according to his instructions.
Liz Keith researched and developed recommendations for an online community for youth participants in NetAid's Global Citizenship Corps. Her deliverables included a conceptual model of the community and recommendations for the community's social and technical infrastructure. Liz enjoyed the challenge of a project that contributed something to NetAid beyond its day-to-day operations. And she found direct applications from what she learned in her SI classes, especially SI687: E-Communities.
Peter Keller-Transburg worked with the Online Volunteering Manager to develop strategic priorities for targeting the college-age crowd with a new online volunteer tool NetAid has developed called the VolunteerGuru. He researched college volunteer organizations, career centres, study abroad programs, international opportunity organizations and summarized ways that these entities could best be leveraged to promote the Guru to a broad audience. Peter developed a priority matrix with 6 key approaches and gave rationales and instructions for how to implement them. He enjoyed the challenge of the work and appreciated the opportunity to work for an organization with a focus that matches his career interests.

- It was helpful to talk to senior staff and hear about their career trajectory, and get their insight on some of the career choices facing me imminently.
