New-York Historical Society Library

Two students did their ASB 2004 internship at the New-York Historical Society (N-YHS). They were given tours of the library and museum, and the conservators also gave them a special tour of the conservation labs where they care for the materials in the library.
In assistance to the Curator of Manuscripts, Josue Hurtado re-housed historical materials and created an EAD-ready finding aid for the Stanford White Papers. The materials and artifacts he worked with dated from the 18th though the early 20th century, including papers signed by John Hancock and President John Quincy Adams.
Kristen Demlow worked on a number of tasks in her role as assistant to the Interim Library Director. One such task was to work with artifacts from the September 11 tragedy that were being organized and categorized into a collection and to enter information about the artifacts into a Filemaker database. Kristen also had the opportunity to accompany her supervisor to an auction where they purchased some African-Americana items for the library collection.
- ...I also liked being at the N-YHS because we had read about it in 504. It was fascinating to see which things had changed since the book was written and which things the Historical Society is still working on to improve.
- We got a great behind-the-scenes look at everything and were able to exchange information and ideas with professionals in the field.
