Poets House

Two SI students worked at Poets House, a public literary center and 40,000-volume poetry archive in the heart of SoHo. The library includes books, journals, chapbooks, audio tapes, videos and electronic media. Poets House is the most comprehensive open-access collection of poetry books in the United States.

Josh Leopold worked on a project cataloguing chapbooks for the in-house database. The chapbook collection contains early work by many of the best known contemporary poets, work not yet published in book form and the first publications of emerging poets from across the country.

April Witteveen worked as a research intern gathering information about preservation and conservation to prepare Poets House for its future move to a new location. She learned best practices for preservation, explored different preseveration methods and tools, and was exposed to various facets of conservation.

Both Josh and April enjoyed their exposure to such a unique institution and being in a casual yet professional environment with enthusiastic, supportive co-workers. They also took advantage of their Poets House assignment to explore much of what SoHo has to offer.
