Two SI students worked with the National Library of Medicine during ASB 2005. In addition to working on their projects, the students got a formal tour of NLM, a formal tour of the current Changing the Face of Medicine exhibit, and a tour of National Institutes of Health Library with some of the NLM Associates.

Mellanye Lackey spent the week evaluating the MeSH home page and browser page from the viewpoint of a novice user.  In her report, she made several suggestions to the MeSH team who were very enthusiastic about having her there and gave valuable feedback to her comments. Mellanye’s time at the NLM affirmed her desire to work in a health sciences library. Her positive experience left her feeling optimistic about the field and about new developments in health sciences informatics.

Kathy Schroeder worked in the Specialized Information Services Division at the NLM.  Over the course of the week, she conducted a usability test of the TOXMAP site, which identifies where in the United States toxins are released.  Kathy met with seven staff members to conduct the test and then submitted a write-up of her findings at the end of the week.

What the students had to say about working at NLM:

“It was all positive.  I will definitely consider applying for the NLM Associates Program, and I found out about the NIH Informationist Program.”

“I had a great opportunity to see many different areas at NLM.”
