Title: Faculty Research Seminar Series:
"Podcasting as an Innovation in Learning Technology: A Successful Case Study in Creating Positive Change"
Time: 1:00 PM-2:00 PM
Date: Wed, January 07, 2009
Location: Atkins Conference Room, 1202 SI North
Speakers: Lynn Johnson
Description: Lynn Johnson is assistant dean for informatics and innovation at the U-M School of Dentistry. She leads the implementation of information technology into the traditional teaching and learning activities of the dental curriculum as well as into the clinical education and operations. She is the principal investigator on an NIH grant to develop educational materials about genetics in dentistry and is also the coprincipal investigator on a second NIH grant to investigate the teaching of research skills to dental students using computer-based simulations.

In fall 2004, a group of first-year students at the School of Dentistry asked to have all dental school lectures videotaped and the recordings made available on a Web site. During this talk, Johnson will discuss how the response to this request provided a successful case study in innovation. Innovations in learning technology are commonly made without using instructional design and formative evaluation strategies or involving students. Unfortunately, many novel and innovative projects do not succeed or have disappointing results. The instructional design process helped the School of Dentistry identify and adjust to unexpected circumstances and develop a successful podcasting solution to a learning dilemma. Ultimately, use of these strategies provided the critical data required to ensure long-term and ongoing support for podcasting and laid the ground work for future innovations in learning.

To promote in-depth intellectual engagement during the seminar, guests are encouraged to read Johnson's paper in advance.
