Related Research Projects & Centers

The projects and centers below represent just some of the groups SI faculty and students closely collaborate with in performing research.

  • Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (AI) → faculty and students work closely with colleagues throughout the University in such areas as computer science, linguistics, psychology, economics, biology, controls, and philosophy. This collaborative environment, coupled with unusually diverse perspectives, leads to a valuable interchange of ideas within and across research groups.
  • The Bentley Historical Library → comprises three divisions: the Michigan Historical Collections, the University Archives and Records Program, and Access and Reference Services. The library has amassed extensive holdings on the history of the state and the university, including more than 30,000 linear feet of archives and manuscripts, 57,000 printed volumes, 1.5 million photographs and other visual items, and more than 10,000 maps.

  • The Bioinformatics Program → at U-M is an interdepartmental program that uses computational methods to integrate, model, store, and retrieve biomedical data and ultimately to use this information to better understand biological systems.
  • The Center for Biologic Nanotechnology → at the U-M Medical School is a multidisciplinary group that focuses on biological applications of nanomaterials.
  • The Center for Ergonomics → is a multidisciplinary organization devoted to education and research in ergonomics, the study of work and the efficiency and safety of human-machine systems.
  • The James and Anne Duderstadt Center → (formerly the Media Union) brings together information resources, information technology, production studios, and the combined talents of information professionals from across campus units to serve the University community. The Media Union is an all-campus resource and a place to facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration, integrative learning, and exploration.
  • The Institute for Social Research (ISR) → is one of the largest and oldest academic survey and social research organizations in the world. The ISR is dedicated to social science in the public interest. Representing the disciplines of psychology, political science, economics, anthropology, and public health, ISR research scientists have directed some of the longest-running and most widely cited and used studies in the nation.
  • The Virtual Reality Laboratory (VRL) → concentrates on industrial applications of virtual environments. Research focuses on virtual prototypes of automotive and marine designs, simulation of manufacturing processes, engineering applications, architectural walk-through models, free-form shape design, accident simulations, educational activities, and more.
