Academic Goals

SOCHI aims to help HCI students on their academic journey through the following:
  • Serving as a voice for HCI students about current classes, prospective classes, and other academic concerns.
  • Providing feedback to faculty and administration about planned requirements, curriculum development, and faculty hiring.
  • Promoting information sharing among students on cognates and SI classes.

Academic Activities

We hold several events each term to help students plan their schedules, select cognates, and discuss other academic concerns related to HCI at the School of Information. To see what is happening this term, check out our Events page. The following are some of our major academic-related activities:

Peer Advising

Towards the end of every semester, SOCHI members meet informally over coffee to discuss classes and how to meet academic goals. Second year students offer advice to first year students in their academic planning while second year students help each other decide what courses or cognates to take to fulfill their remaining requirements.

Faculty Advising

Towards the end of every semester, an HCI faculty member is invited to discuss the HCI courses, cognates, and other academic issues.

Curriculum Discussion

At a monthly meeting each semester, SOCHI students meet to discuss the SI curriculum, faculty hiring process, and other concerns they may have about how well the HCI program at SI meets their needs.
