Typical of an architect working within the Beaux-Arts practices, Kahn collaborated with other specialists on the design (Illustration 6). The New York sculptor, Ulysses Ricci sculpted the University motto, "Artes, Scientia, Veritas," over the central entryway. Di Lorenzo studios of New York created the paintings decorating the soffits of the lobby ceiling; this same firm was active decorating the porch soffits of the Clements Library a year earlier and did similar work in the Graduate Library previous to that. Finally, the landscape plan surrounding the building was worked out originally by Pitkin and Mott of Cleveland. Architects, such as Albert Kahn, pioneered thee idea of professional specialization, collaborating with landscape architects, sculptors, and painters, particularly on large-scale commissions.
