What other buildings do you know that share stylistic features?

 

 

I. Summary.
In this lesson, students will examine different buildings with the same style.

II. Objectives, Standards, and Prerequisites

  • Students will recognize different architectural styles.
  • Students will compare and contrast the use of the same styles in different buildings.

III..Procedure

Tools and Materials

  • Computers with Internet access
  • Printer
  • Access to journals and magazines which may be cut up
  • Scissors
  • Photographs of buildings
  • Marker/Paint/Crayons
  • Construction Paper

*This project can be done in small groups of 2 or 3 students.

1. Students choose a style type and search through the UMarch website for buildings with that style type.

2. Students also search through journals and magazines for other buildings using the same style.

3.They make a collage of both UM and non UM buildings exemplifying the chosen style.

4. Students compare and contrast the similarities and differences in the use of the style in different buildings.

5.Students present their collage to the class comparing and contrasting their findings.

IV. Classroom Assessment

Student evaluation should be based upon both process and product. Evaluation should take into account the process of research. Areas of consideration should include the following:

  • Quality of student involvement in research and discussion
  • Quality of involvement in group collaborations including assessments of communication, cooperation, and contributions
  • Quality of involvement in the exploration process including examination of the UMarch images, exploration and reading of other outside journals to find buildings with the same style
  • Assessment of student involvement in evaluating differences and similarities in the use of a certain style in different buildings
