flute

A hollow groove or channel, especially one of many such parallel grooves, normally semicircular or semieliptical in section, used decoratively, along the shaft of a column. Flutes in the Greek Doric Order are segmental, separated by sharp arrises, and there are usually twenty flutes. There are usually twenty-four in the Ionic, Corinthian and Composite Orders.
