ionic column

The second of the Orders used by the Greeks and the third used by the Romans. The proportions of the column are more slender than in the Doric Order, and the Order has a base. The shaft is generally fluted, with fillets between flutes. When columns are used in the flanks of buildings as well as in the “front”, the capitals on each angular column are made to face both the contiguous sides of the building, with the two adjacent volutes at the corner bending in a concave curve towards the angle.
