Sharing DEI Feedback & Reporting Concerns
At UMSI, we are committed to fostering a reflective community working to actively embed equity, accessibility, and inclusion into our policies and daily practices. While we hope that your experiences at UM and UMSI always reflect this commitment at times we know they may not. If you are a witness to or experience conduct that discriminates, stereotypes, excludes, harasses or harms you or any person in our community based on an identity (race, ethnicity, national origin, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, disability, age, work status, or religion) we encourage you to speak with someone and to file a report of your concerns with the university. Please know that all University of Michigan faculty, students and staff are protected from retaliation. There are multiple options for sharing or reporting concerns described below:
There are a number of individuals you can speak with about an incident or concerns. The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Office staff, in particular, are available to talk with you, listen without judgement, talk through options and recommend next steps and resources based on your wishes and specific concerns.

We recognize that DEI concerns can intersect with and impact mental health. Contact UMSI’s embedded CAPS counselor for confidential support with mental health concerns.
If your concern is regarding sexual & gender based misconduct, we are also here to provide support, listen and connect you to resources, however, DEIO staff (as well as other UMSI faculty and staff) have additional reporting obligations.
DEI Concerns connected to an Academic Dispute or Academic Grievance
If your DEI concern is connected to an academic dispute or academic grievance we encourage you to also speak with an academic advisor and review the academic dispute policy for your degree program. Based on your wishes, we can help connect you with the Office of Academic and Student Affairs (OASA) and/or connect you with further resources.
These websites provide additional information re: reporting, the process, how to remain anonymous if you so choose and expected follow up.
UMSI students, faculty and staff may provide anonymous feedback through this secure form. All entries are retrieved and reviewed by the DEI Office. Depending on the nature of the feedback, we will consult with the DEI Committee for input and recommendations regarding follow up.
Examples of possible anonymous feedback include:
- Recommendations for DEI programming and/or initiatives
- Feedback on DEI activities or events
- Questions DEI Office or Committee organization or structure
- Concerns re: UMSI Climate (e.g. social environment, sense of belonging etc.)
There are also Confidential Resources on campus, that maintain confidentiality within the University for the individual who shared the information. Confidential Resources are prohibited from disclosing confidential information until (1) given permission by the person who disclosed the information; (2) there is an imminent threat of harm to self or others; (3) the conduct involves suspected abuse of a minor under the age of 18; or (4) as otherwise required or permitted by law or court order. Who are Individuals with Reporting Obligations?
Individuals with reporting obligations (IRO’s) (also known as mandatory reporters) are obligated to share with the Office of Institutional Equity (OIE), any information related to sexual and gender based misconduct. Example of misconduct include (but are not limited to):
- Sexual assault
- Sexual/gender-based harassment
- Intimate partner violence
- Retaliation and violation of protective measures.
If your concern involves any of the above situations the IRO is obligated to share information via a reporting form.
