Diversity, equity & inclusion at the School of Information

Each member of the University of Michigan School of Information’s scholarly community comes from a unique background, making our school stronger and helping us to fulfill our mission of building a better world through technology and information. The diverse stories of our faculty, staff and students reflect the intellectual diversity of the dozen social and technological sciences that make up the unique UMSI approach to information problems.
We actively work to increase the diversity of our school and to create a welcoming environment for everyone who chooses to share their unique strengths here at UMSI. An assistant dean, a graduate student assistant and an assistant director steer UMSI’s DEI efforts. All faculty and staff address DEI broadly in annual goals and report on these in annual evaluations, and a DEI committee including faculty, staff and students works to promote inclusion across the school.
To strengthen UMSI's commitment to increasing the diversity of our school and making its environment welcoming to everyone, the UMSI Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Strategic Plan was created in 2015 and is revised every year. It represents UMSI’s commitments in coordination with the University’s five-year (2016-2021) Strategic Plan for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion.
The goals and outcomes from UMSI’s plan are summarized in a progress report the school produces each year. You can read the Year Three Progress Report now.
