Others' expectations for us—and our own expectations for ourselves—can be defied. Institutions can give way to independent living with community supports. Rage can be transmuted into vulnerability and effective advocacy. Disability isn't static, and neither are we. In this session, we’ll explore part two of Disability Visibility, titled "Becoming." This grouping of essays delves into the dynamic nature of disability, highlighting how experiences, identities and understandings of disability evolve over time and across different contexts.

UMSI faculty, staff, students and alumni are welcome. Lunch will be provided for those who register for in-person attendance. RSVP here

“But I haven’t read or attended anything yet…”

That's okay! The essays are standalone works (~6 page average), and you can participate as much as you’re able. Your questions and contributions are valued, even if you haven’t read everything. The emphasis will be on the importance of diverse perspectives and storytelling. Our discussions will be guided by interest and prompts from the workbook, but will remain open to the natural flow of conversation. This conversation might even inspire you to dig deeper into the essays we discuss!

We look forward to another thought-provoking and enriching discussion as we continue our journey together.
