The Dan and Monica Atkins Scholarship Fund

“A wonderful privilege” is how Professor Dan Atkins describes his career, which spans over 50 years of the computer revolution, 40 of them spent in distinguished posts at the University of Michigan. He was dean of the College of Engineering, founding dean of the School of Information, and associate vice provost for research cyberinfrastructure.

Dan’s impact as a catalyst for ideas, an implementer and a leader is hard to quantify, and he has enriched countless student lives as a mentor and educator.

Monica Atkins, also a lifelong educator, spent 27 years teaching Spanish and German in Ann Arbor area schools, after a career in translating. She has a BA from Bucknell University, an MA from the University of Illinois, and a teaching certificate from the University of Michigan.

Dan and Monica have two children and five grandchildren, all of whom live in Ann Arbor. “Being mom and grandma is the job that trumps them all,” says Monica.
