UMSI Bicentennial events

The School of Information and the University of Michigan have planned a number of events throughout 2017 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the University of Michigan.

March 2 UMSI Bicentennial celebration — San Francisco Regional Event: Hosted at Google's headquarters, it features deans from UMSI and Engineering speaking on the future of the university. Coffee Lab, Google headquarters. Mountain View, CA. 6:00 - 7:30 pm.

April 6-8 Bicentennial Spring Festival. The weekend features a flag-raising ceremony, a tree-planting ceremony, U-M faculty talks around town, and other lively events. It culminates with "True Blue! A Tribute to Michigan," a multimedia performace showcasing James Earl Jones, Darren Criss, Sanjay Gupta and Cecilia Muñoz. For a detailed list of events, click here.  

April 13 UMSI Bicentennial celebration — Boston Regional Event. This takes place at Harvard's Houghton Library, which is celebrating 75 years in 2017. The event features UMSI leadership and UMSI faculty member Barry Fishman. Our host is UMSI alumnus Tom Hyry, Houghton Library Director. Dr. Fishman will speak about his innovative learning management system, Gradecraft, and Houghton's rare book collection will be featured. Houghton Library, Harvard Yard, Cambridge, MA. 5:00 - 6:30 pm. 

May 3 UMSI Bicentennial celebration — Washington, D.C. Regional Event. Hosted at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian and featuring UMSI Dean Tom Finholt, UMSI faculty member Cliff Lampe, and UMSI alumna and Smithsonian Library Director Nancy Gwinn. Cliff Lampe will share information about Citizen Interaction Design, a university and Michigan community partnership, and attendees will have the opportunity to experience museum collections. 4th Floor Patrons Lounge, Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian. Washington, D.C. 6:00 - 7:30 pm.

June 26-27 Bicentennial Summer Festival. This event includes the President’s Bicentennial Colloquium: The Evolving Bargain between Research Universities and Society and the MStaff200 Celebration. It overlaps with the Ann Arbor Summer Festival. For more details, click here

August 26 University of Michigan Birthday Celebration

September 15 Bicentennial Detroit Festival. The Bicentennial Detroit Festival will commemorate the University of Michigan’s 1817 founding in Detroit and the many contributions that went into making it happen. We will also celebrate and reflect on U-M’s connections to the city, in the past, present and going forward. Stay tuned for more updates.

September 19 UMSI Bicentennial celebration — New York Regional Event. This event is hosted by UMSI alumnus Robert Parks and features UMSI Dean Tom Finholt and UMSI faculty member Joyojeet Pal. It takes place at the Grolier Club, a New York Society for bibliophiles and graphic arts fans.  Area alumni will have a chance to hear about Joyojeet Pal's movie "For the Love of a Man," a documentary on Indian actor Rajnikanth. Morris Room, Grolier Library. New York, NY. 5:30 - 7:00 pm. REGISTER TO ATTEND.

October 6 UMSI Homecoming Event/Bicentennial SymposiumThis daylong event will feature UM alumni and friends from across the country, including venture capitalist Roger Ehrenberg, Jamie Voris, CTO of Walt Disney Studios, and best-selling author Nancy Pearl. Alumni will have a chance to hear from UMSI faculty and students with topics ranging from libraries to information of the future. The event features student showcases and a reception. October 26-28 Bicentennial Fall Festival. The final festival of the year offers tours, ceremonies, concerts and more celebrating, including Third Century Expo. It concludes with the Saturday Homecoming football game against Rutgers University. Click here for dates and times of the events.
