Veterans and military at UMSI
UMSI has been home to a number of students who were veterans before - and in some cases, during - their time at the School of Information. The University provides support to veterans and the U-M Student Veterans Assistance Program can help familiarize you with the support available for student veterans and active service members. In addition, there are external funding resources specifically for veterans and family members of veterans. Below are stories from former UMSI graduate student veterans.
Iraq war veteran Chad Kijewski (MSI '13) earned dual master's degrees in information and public policy while serving as the state’s joint intelligence plans and policy officer for the Michigan Army National Guard. Read his story.
Alumni Sean Buckner (MSI '12, above) and Sarah LeMire (MSI '12) are combat veterans, husband and wife, and proud of their work at UMSI. They wove military service around their education, and Sean is still active duty in the Army National Guard. Read their story.
Laurie Sutch (MILS '94) is a veteran who used the computer skills she learned in the Army and honed at UMSI to forge a new career. She balanced life in the master's degree program with weekend drills in the Army Reserve. Read her story.
Alfred Speredelozzi (MSI '00) served on board a U.S. Navy guided missile cruiser as a communications officer, an experience that led him to focus on how people could improve their computing experiences as part of his master's degree. Read his story.
