Kai Zheng to serve as interim director of Health Informatics program
Associate Professor Kai Zheng will serve as acting director of the University of Michigan’s Health Informatics program, a master’s degree program offered jointly by the School of Information and the School of Public Health, according to the schools’ deans, Jeffrey MacKie-Mason and Martin Philbert.
Zheng will fill the position formerly held by Charles Friedman, who is stepping down as director of the Health Informatics program in order to become the first chair of the newly formed Department of Learning Health Sciences. Friedman will be the Josiah Macy, Jr. Professor of Medical Education and professor of learning health sciences in the Medical School while retaining his current titles of professor of information with the School of Information and professor of health management and policy with the School of Public Health.
The appointment was approved by the Board of Regents on July 17 and is retroactive to July 1, 2014.
Friedman served as director of the Health Informatics program from September, 2011 until June, 2014. He will continue to serve as co-director of program through the end of 2014 and will remain a member of the program’s core faculty, teaching at least one course each year.
Zheng holds joint associate professorships in both the School of Information and the School of Public Health. He is also affiliated with the School of Nursing, Michigan Institute for Clinical and Health Research, Medical School Department of Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics, and Center for Entrepreneurship. He co-directs the Bio-Repository and Biomedical Informatics Core of the University of Michigan Health System and Peking University Health Science Center Joint Institute for Translational and Clinical Research.
Zheng is a charter member of the Health Informatics faculty and has taught courses in the program since its inception in 2012. He received his PhD from Carnegie Mellon University in information systems and a BE in electrical engineering from Shanghai Jiaotong University.
