Kristin Fontichiaro wins best book award

UMSI Clinical Assistant Professor Kristin Fontichiaro’s book, Growing Schools: Librarians as Professional Developers, has received the Best Professional Guide for School or Youth Librarians Award from Library Media Connection and American Reference Books Annual. The award was presented during the American Library Association conference this summer. Fontichiaro co-edited the book with Debbie Abilock and Violet H. Harada.

The award recognized Growing Schools for being “invaluable for an individual librarian looking to become a professional development leader, and for district librarians in planning and implementing meaningful district-wide professional development.”

Growing Schools explores the role of librarians as leaders in professional development at every level of education and the influence they can have on increasing expertise among faculty, students, families and the community. The book presents successful examples of librarians leading professional learning and the benefits that these approaches have had in bringing information literacy skills to every student.

The book is published by Libraries Unlimited.
