Sandvig, Ellison named to collegiate professorships
Two distinguished faculty members have been appointed to collegiate professorships in the School of Information as approved by the Regents of the University of Michigan.
Christian Sandvig has been appointed the H. Marshall McLuhan Collegiate Professor of Digital Media. In addition to being a professor in the School of Information, Sandvig is also a professor of Communication Studies in the College of Literature, Science and the Arts and professor of Art and Design, Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design.
He received his bachelor of arts degree from the University of California, Davis, in 1997, and graduate degrees in communication from Stanford University (MA, 1999; PhD, 2002). He was an associate professor with tenure at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign before joining the Michigan faculty in 2012.
His research has helped build the field of inquiry that examines information and communication infrastructures as sociotechnical systems. His expertise centers on the origins, development and policy implications of Internet infrastructure. His body of scholarship since coming to Michigan includes one edited book, four journal articles, two best conference papers, six book chapters and a single-authored book in progress.
H. Marshall McLuhan is best known for the theorization of digital media (which he called “electric media”) in his book Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man. The book popularized McLuhan’s phrase “the medium is the message.” McLuhan was the author of 15 books and the recipient of number of awards and honors over the course of his distinguished career; his theories from the late 1950s prefigured later research of everyday digital computing.
The collegiate professorship is for a renewable term of five years, starting September 1, 2018.
Nicole Ellison, professor of information, was named the Karl E. Weick Collegiate Professor of Information earlier this year. The professorship honors Karl E. Weick, an internationally recognized scholar in the area of organizational behavior. His work on sense-making in organizations and organization learning is regarded as seminal in several disciplines, such as psychology, business and information.
Nicole Ellison received her bachelor’s degree from Columbia University, Barnard College in 1991. She earned her PhD from the University of Southern California in 1999. Ellison was a member of the faculty at Michigan State University from 2004 until 2013, when she joined the University of Michigan School of Information in 2013 as a professor, receiving tenure in 2015.
Professor Ellison has significantly contributed to the understanding of the role of social network sites in creating and supporting social capital and self-preservation and relationship forming in online dating contexts. She has published 40 peer-reviewed conference presentations or journal articles, 19 of which have over 100 citations on Google Scholar and two cited over 4000 times. To support her work, she has obtained over $1.8 million in grants from various sponsors including the National Science Foundation, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.
Her collegiate professorship appointment is effective January 1, 2018-August 31, 2022.
