Denoising and demystifying social network services

Assistant professor Cliff Lampe was co-principal investigator of a large study conducted by Michigan State University, “Signal Processing and Information Theoretic Approaches to Denoising and Demystifying Social Network Services." The project sought to understand the underlying nature of social network services—the online platforms that facilitate the building of social networks such as Facebook, YouTube, and Google+.

According to Lampe, a deeper understanding of social network structures and how they evolve over time can be applied to a variety of social issues. For example, as people seek health information via social networks, their ability to understand how these networks function could create better health outcomes. The objective of this project was to develop in-depth understanding of the nature, underlying models, and dynamics of Social Network Services (SNS) with millions and even billions of users.

The project was interdisciplinary in nature and bridged several different communities including electrical engineering, computer science, and social science, thus fostering interaction and communication among them. To promote education and learning, this project actively engaged high school, undergraduate, and graduate students, especially students from under-represented minorities.

As co-principal investigator, Lampe’s responsibilities included designing and conducting data collection efforts, analyzing data and training and mentoring graduate student researchers on the project.

Lampe worked with Principal Investigator Hayder Radha and Co-Principal Investigator Alex Liu, both from Michigan State University, on this project.
