Client-based Courses

UMSI offers organizations from all sectors an opportunity to benefit from students' developing skill sets through client-based courses.  Through these client-based opportunities, students apply knowledge and skills to specific problems in an engaged learning environment, which requires students to combine what is learned in the classroom with what is observed and experienced in the "real world", often at great benefit to the client-organization.

A select number of UMSI courses have client-based opportunities associated with them. Client opportunities include website or application usability evaluation, content management system development, and much more. 

For students

For organizations

What: The following UMSI courses are seeking clients:

SI 485: Information Analytics Project (Fall/Winter terms): Development of software to create, process, integrate, and analyze datasets

SI 487: User Experience Final Project (Winter term): Advanced project course for the BSI User Experience Path. 

SI 501: Contextual Inquiry and Consulting Foundations (Fall term): Information process flow evaluation by a team of students

SI 529: Online Communities (Winter term): Analysis and recommendations for an online community

SI 622: Evaluation of Systems and Services (Winter term): Usability evaluation of a website or software application with detailed and actionable feedback

SI 631: Content Management Systems Practical Engagement Workshop (Winter term): Socially oriented content management system/website development

Where: Course dependent. Some courses allow for remote work while others require local organizations only.

When: Each course has a unique application process. See the individual listings below to determine when the deadline is to apply. Note that at the University of Michigan, fall term runs from September through December and winter term runs from January through April.

Eligibility: Any organization can propose projects.

Cost for organizations: Being a client for a School of Information UMSI Internship Program course is absolutely free. However, there is some degree of time commitment from each organization, which varies by course opportunity.

Furthermore, you will also have the opportunity to get a sneak peak at particular UMSI students you might want to recruit, while exposing students to your organization and services.
