Advanced skills through games
In a variation of the "build it and they will come" theme, Professor Karen Markey has demonstrated that undergraduate students can learn through an online social game called BiblioBouts.
Bibliobouts can be adopted on any campus to teach students the information literacy skills and concepts that they need to know to research and write academic papers.
The game puts professional research tools into students' hands and gives them repeated practice in using these tools to find, evaluate, and select high-quality information for their papers. Students search for sources online, choose their best results, rate and tag their opponents' sources, and compile a final list of the best citations for their topic from a pool of all players' sources.
Markey works with other UMSI faculty members and doctoral students on the project, which is being carried out through funding from the Institute for Museum and Library Services.
