SI SpotlightDean Karavite (MSI '01)
"[I had a] somewhat odd combination of interests (medical information and adaptive technology), ... I soon discovered that SI was guiding me toward a fundamental understanding of the qualities of information that are shared across almost every system or environment imaginable. At SI I realized my seemingly divergent interests weren't really divergent at all."

Before SI: Earned a BS in interdisciplinary studies from Eastern Michigan University. Worked for five years as primary clinical research data manager for the chief of cardiology at the U-M Medical Center and for another seven in adaptive technology, the application of technology for people who are disabled.
At SI: Worked in U-M's adaptive technology lab, work that led to a Directed Field Experience exploring how to modify U-M CourseTools -- the University's online course resources system -- to serve as an online digital text library of all course materials for students with visual and learning disabilities. Did an independent study course with the Archimedes Project at Stanford evaluating the usability of screen-reading software for the visually impaired.
After SI: Before accepting his current position as manager of operating room information systems at Temple University Health Systems, he worked for IBM Global Services as a usability specialist. Of his degree with a specialization in HCI, he says, "This has been an incredibly valuable asset that I continually incorporate in my work."
