University of Michigan School of Information

We prepare information leaders to leverage technology for good.
Information is more available than ever, but harder to trust. Online platforms connect us, yet they put our personal data at risk. Artificial intelligence is changing how we work and live — but only for the better if we know how to use it.
At the School of Information, we train students to think critically about the human impact of technology. Whether they’re studying data science, user experience design, library science and digital archives, or health informatics, they gain the technical skills required to lead in emerging roles, with the strong ethical grounding to work in service of the world.
UMSI faculty are at the forefront of the most critical issues shaping our future. They guide the responsible development and use of AI, combat disinformation that threatens democracy and harness data to improve global health.
As technology evolves, so do the challenges the world faces. Your support equips UMSI graduates and faculty to innovate with purpose — as problem-solvers who put people first.
“At UMSI, we don’t just assume that technology makes the world a better place. We believe that technologies need to be carefully designed, built and deployed in ways that benefit people.”

Campaign priorities
The $20 million we raise through this campaign will define the next decade at UMSI. With your support, we can advance technology that protects what matters to humanity. And we can sustain the school’s rapid growth, which outpaces current donations. We’ll do this by putting people first.

Preparing students through hands-on experience
The terrain in every industry requires thoughtful navigation from leaders who can bridge technical expertise and an understanding of human needs. UMSI graduates stand out because they have this rare skill, and the experience to back it up. Tackling projects with real clients and stakes provides an on-the-ground education — and organizations around the globe benefit from timely solutions at no cost. Through client-based projects, internships and global experiences, UMSI students learn how to go beyond code to ensure technology works for people.

“We all grew up in an increasingly polarized political atmosphere. I feel like it's our duty to leverage what we've learned at UMSI as a way to bring information to people. I think that's really powerful.”
—Susan Cheng (BSI ’25)

Delivering solutions for a complex world
We believe what matters most to society, the urgent and the unknown, is within the scope of information science. Our world-class faculty embrace this responsibility. Every day, they wield information and technology as tools to ensure transparency in government, reduce health care inequities and drive responsible innovation. From the classroom to testimonies before Congress, they are trusted voices guiding the most important conversations of our time. This is research that reaches outward — to shape policy, redefine industries and create sustainable change in partnership with communities.

WHERE INNOVATION LIVES
With modern classrooms and maker labs, the Leinweber Computer Science and Information Building makes space for bold ideas.
This state-of-the-art complex is UMSI’s new home on North Campus, shared with the Computer Science and Engineering Division of Michigan Engineering. Here, you’ll find synergy: Between information science, computer science and the top scholars advancing innovation in each.

Making a UMSI education possible for more people
At UMSI, a first-generation college student from Michigan discovered a passion for making medical devices work better for people of color — she’s now considering a PhD. Expanding access to the study of information science is about more than individual opportunity. When information experts reflect the full range of identities and needs found in the communities they serve, the result is better-designed systems and more equitable access to data. We are committed to removing financial barriers so the most passionate students can pursue the highest levels of education.

“I would love to see a future where even more people can be extended this opportunity. I would love if we keep seeing that circle expand of who gets to come and have these experiences.”
—Clayton Zimmerman (MSI ’25)
