Carrie Hammerman (MSI '03)

Carrie Hammerman
"I think the faculty are great. Seek them out for guidance in your classes and as you make your plans for the future."

Before SI: Earned a BA in political science from U-M. While working in a local government setting, she became dissatisfied with how they were delivering information to the people who needed it. Decided on SI's master's program (an IEMP specialization) to help in "reforming government with new tools to provide information."

At SI: Completed the dual-degree master's program with the Ford School of Public Policy at U-M. "It's quite all right to enroll in one (master's) program and decide when you're there that you're interested in a second program.... Using the ideas and knowledge from both programs allowed me to get what I wanted out of my educational experience."

First DFE was with Cyber-state, an information technology advocacy and research organization in Michigan. Worked in the area of education and IT, looking at how legislators use information when they set policy. Spent her second summer at SI working with the city government in Ann Arbor.

After SI: After graduation she took a job as a policy analyst at Cyber-state (now CyberMichigan →) where she focused on the role of IT in economic development, health care, and other public policy issues in the state of Michigan, working with legislators to help "set policy as it relates to technolgies that are constantly changing."

Now with another nonprofit policy organization, Corporation for a Skilled Workforce, where she has called on her SI background for a project helping low-income people in the workforce development system gain IT skills.
