SI SpotlightScott Martin (MSI '05)
"The fact that SI is an 'information school,' rather than a traditional library science school, offered a lot of opportunities to work with new technologies and ideas about librarianship."
|
Before SI: BA in biology from Kalamazoo College, master's in genetics from the University of Chicago. Spent five years in basic pharmaceutical research at Pharmacia Corporation (now Pfizer) before coming to SI.
At SI: "I spent two semesters doing collection development work for the Internet Public Library, which was a terrific experience. I also had the opportunity to work as part of a group in evaluating science reference questions that had been submitted to the IPL, which was very rewarding and set some personal expectations about ways to approach evaluation of digital reference services." Being a part of the larger U-M community helped Scott prepare for his career. "It really was invaluable. There's so much happening at U-M, so many new projects, and such a culture of pushing the envelope, that the potential fields of exploration for a budding librarian are almost limitless."
After SI: Scott found a perfect job to blend his interests in librarianship and the sciences. He's now biological sciences librarian and coordinator of digital initiatives in the sciences at the University of Michigan Shapiro Science Library. "Given the position's title, it was fairly obvious when I applied that the Science Library was looking for someone with exactly my background: a librarian with roots in the biological sciences and who was also ready to get on board with new technologies that support the mission of the Science Library."
While a student, Scott picked up valuable experience at the same library where he works full time. He was a reference libarian while carrying out a Directed Field Experience. "I didn't come into the interview 'cold.' My potential colleagues had already had a chance to develop opinions about me as a librarian."
