SI SpotlightJulie Darling (MSI '05)
"I believe the field of school library media is evolving into a field saturated with technology. The Master of Science in Information gave me the advantage of studying technology, traditional librarian skills, and the place at which the two merge."

Before SI: Julie earned a bachelor's degree in psychology with a minor in ethnology at the University of Michigan. Before coming to SI, she also picked up some career-related experience as a clerk at the Ann Arbor District Library and was a teacher's assistant in special education classrooms at Ann Arbor Pioneer High School and in Cornwall, U.K., at the Penair School. She also managed the pilot after-school library program at Pioneer High School.
At SI: In addition to taking courses in the Library and Information Services specialization, Julie served as an assistant librarian at Greenhills School in Ann Arbor .
You could say that Julie found her niche at SI, and although she picked up valuable experience through her project work, she also benefited from her student group experiences. She served as president of the Student Association of School Librarians.
"Many of the members of this group still keep in touch," she says. "We meet up at conferences and have an informal support network for practicing school library media specialists in Michigan. Our group was small, but very tight-knit. We worked hard to support one another and still do."
Another benefit that Julie found in attending SI was access to the resources of the University of Michigan as a whole. "The U-M community is an intellectually stimulating, culturally rich environment. Being a member of this community was a wonderfully enriching experience."
After SI: Now young adult services librarian at the Dexter District Library in Michigan. Previously, she was a library media specialist at East Middle School in the Plymouth-Canton Community School District in Michigan. Before that, she worked at the Cranbrook Schools, an independent school located in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, where she was librarian at the Kingswood Girls' Middle School. At Cranbrook, Julie won the Harris Award for outstanding contributions by a faculty member early in his or her career.
Also while at Cranbrook, Julie was awarded a grant to participate in the National SEED Project on Inclusive Curriculum at the Wellesley Centers for Women at Wellesley College. SEED -- Seeking Educational Equity and Diversity -- is a staff-development equity project for educators in public and private schools.
"My education at SI allows me to be innovative in my day-to-day activities. I have a lot of freedom for creative exploration at my job and the theoretical knowledge that I attained through my degree has helped me feel comfortable as a member of the library and the school's technology teams and also in exploring both literature and new technology with my students."
