SI SpotlightApril Witteveen (MSI '05)
Another advantage of the SI program is being able to take courses in other U-M schools and colleges. In fact, you're required to earn some of your credits outside SI. "Having access to all the resources of a Big 10 university was great; being able to take elective classes in other departments was also a plus."

Before SI: "Before attending the School of Information, I had a very valuable BA in English. It turns out this degree is the best qualification for a great job in food service," she quips. "Looking back, being a waitress is great preparation for a career as a librarian; just substitute books for food!"
At SI: SI encourages students to become involved in social and professional organizations as much as their schedules allow. For April, her position as a clerk and as a Public Library Associate at the Ann Arbor District Library proved invaluable.
"Also, my positions of leadership in the student chapter of the Special Libraries Association and the School of Information Student Association prepared me for my current role as the chair of the Oregon Young Adult Network," she says.
"While I feel that experience is the best teacher for those of us working in libraries, I was much more confident approaching my new position having come from a program that stresses an inter-disciplinary look at information. Although I'm still not sure that knowing how to solve the Nash Equilibrium helps me in my day-to-day life..."
After SI: April is now a teen librarian at the Deschutes Public Library in Bend, Oregon. She encourages you to "actively pursue internships and jobs that will complement your studies, but also keep your mind open to other opportunities that give you an experience different from what you initially planned on pursuing."
As it turned out for April, a change in direction in her life was beneficial. "I entered SI with intentions of becoming a special collections librarian in a museum, but now I'm loving life as a teen librarian!"
