Erik W. Johnston (Ph.D. '07)

Erik Johnston
"SI is an intellectual crossroads of many disciplines," Erik says. "The easy access down any of the roads to business, complexity, and political science was wonderful to develop a true multidisciplinary research agenda."

Before SI: At the University of Denver, Erik earned a B.S. in computer science and psychology, a Master of Business Administration, and a Master of Information Technology.

At SI: Erik found that one of the assets of the School of Information is being able to take advantage of the wealth of resources at the the University of Michigan. He also enjoyed the collegiality of the SI doctoral program. "The Ph.D. community at SI is special. The amount of collaboration because of diverse expertise is unique. The health of the community and the spirit of participation to continue to develop it was something special," he says.

After SI: Now an assistant professor at Arizona State University in the School of Public Affairs and the School of Computing and Informatics. He developed and teaches "Policy Informatics" and an advanced regression course for "Public Policy Analysis."

Erik also is developing the Center for Policy Informatics at ASU. The center explores the use of tools, models, and simulations to help individuals and groups make policy decisions. A key component of this work is the decision theater, an immersive visualization environment.
