Marcos Vera (MSI '02)

Marcos Vera

"SI is one of the most forward-thinking programs for information studies in the world. It allows you to pursue whatever interests you have, as they pertain to information access, retrieval, economics, and visualizations. While this is a huge spectrum, SI makes it manageable."

Before SI: Earned a BS in cell and developmental biology with a minor in art history from the University of Rochester. Worked in the music industry and in an art museum and corporate archives.

While at the art museum, worked with an alumnus of SILS (SI's precursor), who highly recommended the School. "0nce I looked into it and saw they had an archives and records management program, I was keenly interested. After I came to visit and spoke with a student, I was hooked. The foundations courses sound so interesting and worthwhile to the overall aspect of a degree focusing on 'information.'"

At SI: Did a first-year SI 501 group project with the U-M Museum of Art that landed him an internship during his second year. Interned over the summer in the research department of People magazine and at Electronic Arts Intermix (a media arts nonprofit), devising a plan for their library and helping develop its archives. Had also worked at the Detroit Public Library in the Hackley Collection on the Roland Hayes Papers.

In his first year, worked as a head librarian in one of the U-M residence halls through what was then the Residence Hall Librarian program (now the Community Learning Centers program). In his second year, he was a resident fellow of the Lloyd Hall Scholars Program, teaching a self-designed argumentative writing course to first-year undergraduates and teaching a course on academic and career development. "This could not have happened at any other school! Not only will I leave U-M with an MSI, but I will have teaching experience in one of the nation's premier research institutions."

Also served as president of the SI student chapters of both the Society of American Archivists and the Special Libraries Association.

After SI: Started as an information center associate at Entertainment Weekly magazine in New York and is now database librarian for the magazine's ew.com.
