Biography

Ramiro Serrano Vergel is a Lecturer III at the University of Michigan School of Information (UMSI), where he teaches courses in Information Visualization, Extended Reality (XR), and Information Analysis. His teaching and research focus on the intersection of human-computer interaction, immersive technologies, and data visualization, with an emphasis on designing interactive systems that improve learning, training, and decision-making.

Before joining the UMSI faculty, Ramiro served as a Research Associate at the University of Michigan's Sustainable Future Hub and the Emerging Analytics Center at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, where he collaborated on multidisciplinary projects spanning virtual and augmented reality, urban planning, anatomy training, industrial applications, and scientific visualization. His work has also included industry collaborations with Halliburton and the development of immersive visualization tools for engineering and energy applications. Ramiro earned a Ph.D. in Computer and Information Sciences from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, an M.S. in Systems and Computing Engineering from Universidad de los Andes, and a bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering from Universidad Industrial de Santander, Colombia. His research has been published in leading journals, including IEEE Transactions on Human-Machine Systems, Multimedia Tools and Applications, SoftwareX, and Urban Forestry & Urban Greening.

His current interests include immersive analytics, information visualization, virtual and augmented reality, spatial computing, human-computer interaction, and the use of XR and AI to support education, simulation, and collaborative decision-making.
