A holistic approach

The School of Information has an Academic Success team whose mission is to support the needs of students academically and personally, because we believe the two are interconnected. A student’s well-being outside the classroom — including access to basic resources and support for mental and physical health — often impacts their academic performance. Their academic experience can, in turn, impact their well-being outside the classroom.

The Academic Success team collaborates with staff and faculty across UMSI and the university to offer wraparound support, helping each student navigate their academic journey successfully. The resources we provide are tailored to meet the individual needs of UMSI students, including student caregivers, first-generation college students, transfer students and students with disabilities.

We connect students with the following:

  • Mental health and well-being resources, including an embedded psychologist
  • Emergency funding for one-time, unforeseen expenses
  • Academic resources, including tutoring and skill-building workshops
  • Campus and community resources

UMSI Student Care Referral

When a student is struggling inside or outside the classroom, asking for support can be difficult. Faculty, staff, peers and family members who have a non-urgent concern about a UMSI student — including but not limited to academic difficulty, financial hardship, mental health, a medical issue, extended absence or concerning behavior — are strongly encouraged to submit the UMSI Student Care Referral. Students may also refer themselves through this form. If you have any questions, please email [email protected].

Accommodation support

The Academic Success team is available to support students through the process of getting registered with Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD), a central office at U-M, and navigating their academic experience with disability accommodations.

iSuccess program for transfer students

iSuccess is a series of activities and programs designed to support undergraduate transfer students’ successful transition to UMSI. iSuccess focuses on cohort-building while providing space for transfer students to address the unique opportunities and challenges they encounter as students new to U-M.

Tutoring

Students can attend office hours to receive guidance on course-specific content from instructors and graduate student instructors. In addition to this support, students have access to free tutoring in content areas like programming and math through the UMSI Peer Tutoring Program. The Academic Success team is available to offer additional resources as needed. Current students can contact [email protected].
